What Should You Bring on Egypt Tours?
Packing for an Egypt trip is not just about choosing clothes suitable for hot weather. The beaches of Sharm El Sheikh, the city pace of Cairo, the desert safari and places of worship each create different needs. You can adapt the list below to your tour program and travel season.
Documents and reservation information
Check your passport's validity period, visa requirements and blank pages. Store your flight ticket, hotel voucher, tour program, travel insurance and emergency contact information in a form accessible offline on your phone. It is useful to keep a copy of important documents in a separate bag.
Store a passport photo only in a secure place. Note the numbers to call for your payment cards in case of loss. If you are traveling with children, verify the required permission and kinship documents according to current official rules.
Daily clothing
Prefer light, breathable and quick-drying clothes. Cotton t-shirts, thin shirts, comfortable trousers or long skirts are practical for city tours. To protect yourself from the sun, take a thin top that covers your shoulders.
Dressing more modestly in Cairo, markets and places of worship is both comfortable and appropriate given local sensitivities. Visiting a mosque may require clothing that covers the shoulders and knees. Women can carry a light shawl in their bag.
Evenings and winter period
In the desert climate, there can be a temperature difference between day and night. From November to February, a thin jacket, cardigan or windbreaker is useful in the evenings. Carrying a thin layer is also comfortable in air-conditioned buses, planes and restaurants.
Do not go with only very thin clothes even in summer. Add a light long-sleeved piece to protect yourself from the sun and air conditioning.
For the beach and sea
Take at least two swimsuits, beach slippers, sunglasses, a hat and a high-SPF sun product. Since there may be rocky or reef entrances on the Red Sea coast, water shoes are useful.
Snorkeling equipment may be provided by the hotel or tour; however, those who want to use their own personal mask can bring their own equipment. Ask in advance whether equipment rental, towels and life jackets are included in the package. Do not step on corals and do not remove living or non-living pieces from the sea.
For the desert safari
Take closed sports shoes, a thin scarf to protect your face from dust, sunglasses and a small zippered bag. Slippers or open sandals are not suitable for ATV use. Use a case that protects your phone and camera from dust.
If you will join a safari after sunset, add a thin jacket depending on the season. Leave valuable jewelry and easily lost accessories at the hotel.
Footwear choice
Comfortable walking shoes are the foundation of city and archaeological site tours. Instead of newly purchased shoes you haven't broken in, choose a pair you have used before. Slippers for the beach and separate shoes for the sea are sufficient; an unnecessary number of shoes makes the suitcase heavy.
Health and personal care
Carry the medications you use regularly in their original packaging and in an amount sufficient for the travel period. Check whether a prescription or doctor's letter is required. Simple bandages, products suited to your personal stomach sensitivity, hand sanitizer and wet wipes can be useful.
For medication, get advice from a physician or pharmacist according to your personal health condition. Use reliable sealed bottled water instead of tap water and drink fluids regularly in hot weather.
Electronic items
Take a phone charger, portable charger, headphones and, if needed, a plug adapter. Check the hotel's socket type in advance. Carry the power bank in accordance with the airline's cabin baggage rules; in most cases it is not allowed in checked baggage.
Download an offline map, a translation app and your tour guide's phone number before the trip. Compare data roaming, local SIM or eSIM options in terms of cost.
Money and payment
For small expenses, carrying a limited amount of cash and a card for other payments can be practical. When exchanging currency, prefer authorized points and check the rate. Do not carry all your money in one place.
Verify that your card is enabled for overseas use. Do not approve a payment without seeing the currency and total amount on the payment screen. In negotiated purchases, clarify the price and currency at the outset.
Items to put in cabin baggage
Passport, money, medication, electronic devices, valuables and basic daily necessities should be in your cabin baggage. In case checked luggage is delayed, you can add underwear and a light top to use.
Check the liquid, sharp object and battery rules from the airline's current announcement. If you carry snorkeling equipment or special sports gear, review the size and weight limits.
Avoid unnecessary loads
Check whether the hotel provides towels, hairdryers and personal care products. Choose pieces that match each other instead of separate outfits for each day. Leave empty space and baggage weight allowance in your suitcase for shopping.
