After the breakfast we will have at the hotel, we set off towards Valencia. Guests who wish can join the extra organized Grand City Alicante tour along the way. (40 Euro) Alicante is a historical and tourist city located on the Mediterranean coast in southeastern Spain. A settlement of importance since ancient times, the city was first founded by the Iberians, then conquered by the Carthaginians and Romans. During the Roman period, the area known as "Lucentum" held great strategic importance throughout the Middle Ages. Coming under Arab rule in the 9th century, Alicante experienced significant cultural and economic development during this period, with city walls and irrigation systems being constructed. In the 13th century, the city was conquered by the Castilians and passed to Christian rule. Today, the most prominent historical symbol of Alicante is the Santa Bárbara Castle, built by the Arabs in the 9th century and later expanded by the Christians. The Old Town district (El Barrio), surrounded by historical structures, carries traces of the past with its narrow streets, churches, and traditional houses. The Aljaferia Palace, dating from this period, is one of the finest examples of Islamic architecture in Spain. The city was conquered by Christians in 1118 and became one of the important centers of the Kingdom of Aragon. During the Roman period, the city was known as "Astigi" and was one of the important centers of the Hispania Ulterior province. The city also became an important cultural and economic center during the Umayyad period of Andalusia. Today, walking through the streets of Écija, one can feel a historic atmosphere filled with elegant palaces, churches, and high bell towers dating back to the Baroque period. Especially the Santa María and San Juan churches, dating from the 18th century, are among the finest examples of Baroque art. For travelers interested in history, art, and traditional Andalusian architecture, Écija is like a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.
