Surrounded by the Tagus River, built on protected steep cliffs and encircled by high walls, the city has always been a valuable city throughout history, from Romans to Visigoths, from Andalusia to the Kingdom of Spain. At the same time, Toledo, which was the center of Judaism on the Iberian Peninsula until the late 15th century, houses many important structures ranging from Europe’s oldest surviving synagogue to dozens of churches converted from mosques and the magnificent cathedral where Spain was religiously governed, and is almost a mosaic where three monotheistic religions and their peoples intertwine.
