The Cu Chi Tunnels, built in the 1940s, are a massive underground shelter system consisting of interconnected tunnels. It is said that through these tunnels, which were first used against French colonial forces and later during the American War, Vietnamese people achieved many military successes. Within this tunnel system, which allowed them to approach the enemy silently and unseen before striking suddenly and then disappearing, there are long crawlways, kitchen and rest areas, weapon depots, and clean drinking water wells. From here, we will stop for lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch, we will depart for a panoramic Saigon city tour. First, we will see the palace (Reunification Palace), built in the 1960s as a symbol of independence by the President of South Vietnam but representing the fall of South Vietnam after being overrun by tanks in 1975. Then we will see the Opera House, City Hall, the historic Post Office Building from the French Colonial era, and the Notre Dame Cathedral, an exact replica of the one in Paris. Our tour within the canals will give us the opportunity to see traditional Thai life more closely. We will experience an unforgettable experience passing through wooden houses rising on pillars, floating kitchens, Buddhist Temples where we can feed sacred cat fish, and small family businesses. When Bangkok (especially the old part, Thonburi) was first established, almost all transportation was done via rivers and canals (khlong). Houses, shops, and markets were built along the canals, and people went to work, school, and the market by boat. Instead of streets, there were "waterways," and so foreigners who came here called it the "Venice of the East." When we see elderly vendors paddling up and down the canal selling everything from vegetables and noodles to modern products like electric fans and radios, we will observe that this name still holds true today.
