How to Plan Port Days on a Cruise

How to Plan Port Days on a Cruise

The value of a cruise itinerary is not measured by the number of ports it visits alone. Once an eight-hour port stay has transfers and waiting time removed, it can shrink to a much shorter window for exploring.

Actual usable time

The time the ship docks and departs is not the same as the time you get ashore. Passport control, tender boat queues and transfers to the city center further reduce the real time available. Measure the distance on a map between the port and the main attraction.

Ship excursion or independent trip?

In ports with remote archaeological sites or limited transport, a tour arranged by the ship may be the safer choice. In ports where the city center can be reached on foot, an independent trip can be more flexible and economical. Compare the cancellation conditions.

Last return time

"All aboard" is the last time to board the ship, and it occurs before departure. The ship does not have to wait for a passenger who is exploring independently. It is wise to leave a buffer of at least 60-90 minutes for the return.

Checklist

• Set no more than two main destinations for each port.

• Download an offline map.

• Carry your ship card and emergency phone number with you.

Planning note

The port schedule may change with weather and operational conditions; rely on the daily ship announcement.
