The starting price shown for cruises is only one part of the total holiday budget. Port taxes, daily service gratuities and personal expenses can cause surprises if they are not calculated in advance.
Port taxes
Port taxes are calculated according to the ports the ship visits. In some packages they are included in the price, while in others they are added on the payment screen. Check the contract to see which portion is refunded in case of cancellation.
Daily service gratuities
Many cruise companies apply an automatic daily service charge per person. The amount may vary depending on cabin type and company policy. Ask about the prepayment option, the child policy and whether changes are possible on board.
Other additional expenses
Beverage packages, internet, specialty restaurants, spa, photos, shore excursions and transfers all increase the budget. Foreign transaction fees and the currency used on board are also important.
Checklist
• Get written confirmation that taxes are included in the offer.
• Multiply the daily gratuity by the number of people and nights.
• Choose a beverage package according to your consumption habits.
Planning note
Fees vary by cruise company and season; the current contract and price screen should be used as the basis.
